TURNING KIWIFRUIT WASTE INTO A SPOON? In this Innovation story, we learn about a compostable bioplastic material that incorporates kiwifruit residues and the importance of collaboration in the development of the biospife. Its success represents a significant step in bioplastic development. We see how the knowledge gained may be applied to other products and waste streams, addressing increasing demand for sustainable materials.

The biospife – a novel tool produced through a partnership between ZESPRI and Scion – is made from bioplastic material that incorporates kiwifruit residues. It’s designed to be composted along with the skins when you’ve finished eating the kiwifruit.

This story is about where the land meets the sea. We have 15 134 km of coastline with extensive marine habitat. Land and sea are intricately linked, one impacting on the other – an ecosystem needing care and protection.

Where Land Meets Sea - NZ is surrounded by sea. Our coastlines and marine resources need care and protection. The Coastal Marine Group focuses on the Bay of Plenty – with a particular emphasis on the Rena shipwreck disaster.

Saving Reptiles and Amphibians - Conservation of native frogs, tuatara, skinks and geckos - What’s unique about our native reptiles and amphibians, and why are they at risk? Learn more about the science behind conservation efforts for them here in New Zealand.

Life in the Sea - Exploring New Zealand’s marine environments - New Zealand scientists use a range of methods to learn about life in the sea around us. How do our marine organisms interact, and how do we affect them?
