Robin White Fish and chips, Maketu 1975 Oil on canvas Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, purchased 1975 Auckland Art Gallery, Fish And Chip Shop, New Zealand Landscape, New Zealand Art, Nz Art, Kiwiana, Robin, House Styles, Places

Fish and chips, Maketu; Robin White; 1975; 1975/30 on NZ Museums

Unpretentious suburban or small-town buildings, the backbone of New Zealand's recent architectural history, have pride of place in many of Robin White's New Zealand landscape paintings. This little local fish-and-chip shop, threatened now no doubt by international fast-food chains, has a quiet, unsentimental dignity and charm. White also works extensively as a printmaker, often repeating motifs from her paintings. Elizabeth Eastmond commented of her prints: 'These images of the New Zealand…

Gibbs Farm- land art

Gibbs Farm, Auckland, New Zealand, holds an unusual collection of sculptures by various artists, including renowned natural sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. The edge of the land forms a reflective space, against the seductively dangerous allure of the sea. The figures within the works look with a kind of hope or expectancy toward the sea. A yearning for that which is just beyond our vision; the ungraspable horizon, for new experiences in a restless now - that is, the growth journey…

Painting No. 1; Gordon Walters; 1965; 1966/4 on NZ Museums

Gordon Walters made his first studies using the koru motif in 1956. His early interest in Maori art was reinforced in the 1940s by émigré Dutch artist Theo Schoon and in the '50s by experience of abstract art in Europe. Over the following decade he developed and simplified the ideas expressed in those early studies, culminating in the painting Te Whiti, 1964, and this work, exhibited at the artist's first major one-person show in 1966. For Walters, the koru motif was a way of making sense of…
