During World War II, more than 25,000 Native Americans saw military service. The 1924 Indian Citizenship Act had conferred citizenship on all American Indians. Native men were required to register for the draft, a requirement that some Indian nations, including the Mohawk and Seneca of the Six Nations Confederacy, believed violated their treaties and undermined their sovereignty. Blessed Kateri (Mohawk for Catherine) is a patron of nature. She was threatened with death if she did not renounce Catholicism. In 1677, she began a 200-mile walking journey to a Christian Indian village near Montreal. Kateri led a life of prayer and penitence, taught the young, and helped those in the village who were poor or sick. When she died, witnesses said that her emaciated face became like a healthy child. The lines of suffering and pockmarks disappeared and a smile came upon her lips. ༺♥༻ Mohawk Indian Prayer Oh Great Spirit, Creator of all things; Human Beings, trees, grass, berries. Help us, be kind to us. Let us be happy on earth. Let us lead our children To a good life and old age. These our people; give them good minds To love one another. Oh Great Spirit, Be kind to us Give these people the favor To see green trees, Green grass, flowers, and berries This next spring; So we all meet again Oh Great Spirit, We ask of you.
