Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss attend the Austrian premier of SALOME at the Graz Opera in 1906. | Arnold Schoenberg, Giacomo Puccini and Alban Berg were also in the audience. Alma Mahler described the day memorably in her memoir. When Strauss read the book in the nineteen-forties he wrote in the margins of that description, "All untrue." Gustav Mahler could not gain the consent of the Vienna censor to have it performed at the Vienna State Opera where it was not seen until 1918.
