DC4104 shoves a suburban push-pull set made up of ex British Rail passenger cars into the Waitakere tunnel. This working only had one week left when I photographed it, with EMU sets taking over the Auckland suburban network from the following Monday. The scenic single track section to Waitakere was not included in the electrification scheme, and would sadly be replaced by a bus.

We travelled on the Blue Streak from Wellington to Hawera. In 1972, an 88-seater fast rail service was introduced between Wellington to New Plymouth. It was painted in a two-tone blue colour scheme and nicknamed Blue Streak.

Blue Streak through Orakei, Auckland

Nearing the end of their deployment on the NIMT between Auckland and Wellington, in October 1972 a coupled pair of the 3 'Blue Streak' railcars is seen passing through Orakei station, Auckland. In December with the arrival of the Silver Fern railcars, they were transferred to the Wellington-New Plymouth run (see earlier posts). (Keith Cullen pic).
