Below the level of the cerebral cortex lies the thalamus, the brain's information relay network. Surrounding the thalamus is a group of structures, the limbic system, which is involved in survival behavior and emotions. Closely linked with the limbic system is the hypothalamus, which has overall control of the autonomic nervous system. The cingulate gyrus is involved in survival behavior. The hippocampus is involved in memory storage.

Conjugate eye deviation resulting from a right-sided middle cerebral artery stroke in a right-handed person. The right motor cortex is damaged and signals reaching it from the dominant hemisphere (the left) cannot descend to move the left eye.

Procrastination is a brain, chemical, and emotion issue. Learn to rewire your brain to create happy chems after goal completion and teach you limbic center that the task you are avoiding won't really kill you, even if your brain is sending signals that it will.

Major branches of the middle cerebral artery. (A) Coronal section showing the lenticulostriate, the precentral (pre-Rolandic), central (Rolandic), and the parietal and temporal branches. The internal carotid, anterior cerebral, and anterior communicating arteries; the optic chiasm; the internal capsule; and the temporal lobe of the brain are shown for orientation purposes. (B) Top view showing the anterior, middle, and posterior temporal arteries; the angular artery; the posterior and…
