THAI PUSAM : 27th January 2013 - This festival is celebrated in Tamil Nadu and also in countries like Sri Lanka and Singapore . It is celebrated in the Tamil month of Thai, with the rising of the star called Pusam. The legend of the festival is that Lord Shiva created the god Skanda or Murugan to fight the demon Soorapadam. On this day Goddess Parvati gave Skanda a spear or vel. People take processions to the temple and dance the kavadi attam holding pots on their head.
