Flora Macdonald [Fionnghal nighean Raghnaill ’ic Aonghais Òig], (1722-1790), 1747, by Richard Wilson. Jacobite heroine. She helped Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender, escape by boat to Skye, disguising him as her maidservant. Imprisoned in London, she was released in 1747 and commissioned this portrait which she gave to the captain of the ship which had brought her south, in thanks for the kindness he had shown her.
