Mosaic Nymphaeum with water steps in the House of the Centenary, in Pompeii. The water features were modeled on natural grottoes, which tradition assigned as habitations of the local water nymphs. They were often installed in the peristyles of wealthy homes and villas in order to help produce a relaxing garden atmosphere accented by the sound of trickling water.
