Orthodox Christians fast twice a week and in addition to this weekly fast we participate in four extended periods of fasting throughout the year. Formerly, I would have criticized such practices. I would have said it's, "vain repetition" and "legalistic". But as I studied, and began participating in, the fasts, I realized that these objections were based on a misunderstanding of why we fast. So why do we fast?
