Queen Tamar, 1184-1213  The first woman to rule the nation of Georgia in her own right, Queen Tamar is honored by both her nation and her church. By any account, she was a remarkable woman and an enlightened, successful ruler who managed to hold her throne, despite opposition from her own nobles, and brought her nation into a Golden Age.     Tamar was born in 1160 to George III and his consort Burdukhan.

Queen Tamar of Kingdom of Georgia (reign c. Queen Tamar of Georgia presided over the “Golden age” of the medieval Georgian monarchy. Her position as the first woman to rule Georgia in her own right was emphasized by the title “Mepe” (“King”).

Vardzia is a spectacular cave monastery near Aspindza in southern Georgia. This photo essay will tell you all about the history and legends of this surreal place!

The ancient cave monastery of Vardzia in southern Georgia. The main period of construction was the second half of the twelfth century. The caves stretch along the cliff for some five hundred metres and in up to nineteen tiers. The Church of the Dormition, dating to the 1180s during the golden age of Tamar and Rustaveli, has an important series of wall paintings. The site was largely abandoned after the Ottoman takeover in the 16th century.
