EXOCRINE ACINUS : Dotted line follows the basement membrane of the acinus. The apical ends of the epithelial cells are exposed to the lumen at the center of the acinus, which communicates through the duct tree into the intestine. At the center of this acinus is the centroacinar cell, the initial cell of the intercalated duct. The ducts of the pancreas actually begin within the acini. In other serous glands, the intercalated ducts begin at the edges of the acini.
