Culzean Castle (pronounced cull-ANE: see yogh) is a castle near Maybole, Carrick, on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland. It is the former home of the Marquess of Ailsa but is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. The clifftop castle lies within the Culzean Castle Country Park and is opened to the public.

Culzean Castle Culzean is one of Scotland’s best loved Castles. Situated on the South Ayrshire coast, Culzean Castle is located 4 miles west of Maybole. The castle was built between 1777 and 1792 on the rocky promontory offering magnificent views.

Culzean Castle  The history of Culzean properly starts in 1569.  The first written reference to a Tower House at Culzean dates to the 1400's, although it is possible there was a building here even earlier. Then, it was known as 'Coif Castle', or the 'House of Cove', taking it's name from the caves below. This name was altered to 'Cullean Castle' in the 1600's and the present spelling adopted sometime in the 18th century.
