A golden Hero.... Gabe, the weapons-sniffing dog who conducted 170 combat patrols in Iraq. Thank you Gabe for all you did!

Gabe, a retired military dog who completed more than 210 combat missions in Iraq with 26 explosive and weapons finds, was named American Hero Dog of 2012 at the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards.

A military dog reunited with his former partner on Saturday in Portland after more than three years apart. Luke the Dutch shepherd and Sgt. Stephen Strick met at the Pet Fair at the Portland Expo Center. Luke was there for an exhibit about military working dogs. Strick drove down from Joint Base Lewis McChord in Washington. The two worked together in Iraq for more than a year.

A retired military working dog named Gabe has been named the American Hero Dog for 2012 by the American Humane Associations Hero Dog Awards. The yellow Labrador Retriever was rescued from a pound in Houston, Texas where the military adopted and then trained him. He served over in Iraq in 2006 with Sgt. 1st Class Charles Shuck, who adopted Gabe after Gabe retired in 2009. When on duty, Gabes job was to find hidden guns...

Retired military working dog and 2012 American Humane Association Hero Dog Award winner Gabe passed away yesterday. May he rest in peace with his fallen comrades.
