To dress the star-studded cast of Paul Thomas Anderson's trippy 1970-era detective story, Bridges went straight to the source -- or rather source material in Thomas Pynchon's book on which the film is based. Bridges tells The News that photos of California hippies in the late '60s and singer Neil Young were a major source of inspiration for how he would dress Joaquin Phoenix's scruffy, laidback character, who he described as being "almost accidentally cool."

While Bridges mostly stayed true to Pynchon’s descriptions of the characters, the designer veered a bit off course when it came to Martin Short's Dr. Rudy Blatnoyd. In the book, Blatnoyd is described as wearing an ultra violet velvet suit. Though Bridges ultimately recreated the look, he ended up dressing Short in a plum suit he designed so as not to have the brighter costume take the audience's focus off the story.

Three-time Oscar winner Sandy Powell spent months researching historical references of 1930s France to create one-of-a-kind looks for Martin Scorsese's 3-D film. She told the Daily News she imagined a striped sweater for Hugo (Asa Butterfield) because it was 'instantly recognizable,' yet she was forced to reproduce several versions because the young actor grew four to five inches within the span of filming.
