Romanesque style is marked by great variation in decoration. The carvings are very geometric and appear above the portal (archway) into a cathedral. Note the columns are slender with a smallish capital.
MEROVINGIAN ORNAMENT Ornamental sword hilts and scabbards; cloisonne work, gold and garnets; from the tomb of Childeric I, discovered in Tournai in 1653 by the physician Jean-Jaques Chiflet. Looks similar to parts found in the Staffordshire Hoard.
