Oh how I would love to find a sunny spot for one of these: Diospyros kaki - Japanese Persimmon. Blooms May-June, leaves turn orange/red in fall then when leaves are gone in October-November bright orange persimmons galore!
Sounds like a great coastal plant for California and Oregon. Buckeye trees are used as a nectar source for many native butterflies. Spring Azure/ Echo blue uses Aesculus californica as a larval food source. Native plant equals native insect or bird.
