Low-tech: Visual schedules allow students to organize their day.  It can be used to set up a student’s entire day like the one shown in the picture or it can be used to show smaller portions of the students day like how many tasks they needed to receive a break. Pros: Students can see what will be expected of them at all times. Cons: Students can become too dependent on their schedule and not react well to uncontrollable changes in their schedule (like a fire drill).

Our autism consultant made this visual schedule -- the pieces are connected and fold over so teachers and students dont loose them. Would be great for a chore chart for any kid.

Calm down strategies

Calm down chart. Have students list the steps they use to calm down. Then add pictures from magazines or other sources to add additional structure. Promotes self-regulation and independence.
