In 1119, Bernard's mother died. Since then, his devotion to Virgin Mary, the mother of Christ, intensified.  In his painting, The Vision of St Bernard (c. 1504), Fra Bartolommeo depicts St. Bernard's devotion to the Blessed Mother. Jerónimo Jacinto de Espinosa Mystical Vision of Saint Bernard (ca. 1640-50). The miracle of the ‘lactatio’ was incorporated into the biography of Saint Bernard in the 14th century. While the Saint was praying in front of a sculpture of the Madonna of the Milk, whom he was invoking with filial passion, praying 'Monstra te esse matrem’ (“Show yourself a mother”), the image came to life and sent some drops of her milk to the Saint’s mouth.
