Air Force Base Ondangwa was established at the military base at Ondangwa after the establishment of 1 Military Area in northern SWA in 1969 and soon became the most important AFB in the Operational Area. It formed part of the SAAF's Western Air Command and served in support of the counterinsurgency campaign in SWA and the ground forces operating in the Operational Area and Angola.

Sector 70 was established as the headquarters of one of the 7 geographical areas within South-West Africa used by the SADF to control and coordinate military operations. Sector 70 encompassed East Caprivi, covering the Zambian land border from the Cuando to the Zambezi River, and the riverine border with Zambia along the Zambezi to its Cuando confluence. Headquarters was at Katima Mulilo with 701 Battalion.

34/202 Battalion was founded in 1975 as 34 Battalion and based at Rundu. With the creation of SWATF in 1980 it was renamed to 202 Battalion. It performed the important mission of providing the main mobile reserve element for Sector 20 as well as protecting the main supply route to Rundu from Grootfontein. The unit was predominantly ethnic Kavango.
