Poured concrete fireplace hearth  Build a wood frame.  Place samples of the new floor around the slab and suspend the frame from the new floor.  The bottom of the frame is now sitting exactly at the height of where I need the new slab to be.  Make a pair of sliding scrapers that are the same thickness as the frame.  Pour cement into each section & smooth out with the sliding scrapers.

The raised fireplace hearth is nice place to sit and allows building a cabinet below to store the wood. The hinged doors use gas filled struts to aid in gently lifting/lowering the seats/doors which are covered in marble. I found the gas lifts on eBay for a fraction of the retail price and attached then with modified Stanley angle brackets.

I added thin layers of concrete to our mantel to lighten things up and add a little texture.  I used Ardex Feather Finish concrete, but this time I mixed the concrete to be a little on the watery side and applied it in many, many coats (6 or 7) with a paint brush. I also put on two layers of matte natural-look sealer after the concrete was dry.
