Woman's coat f. Qal'at Sam'an, village northwest of Haleb. Indigo-dyed fabric, silk satin applique produced in Haleb, embroidered by women in village. Inspired by natural surroundings, motifs included cypresses, conifers. Yelek is a long, fitted coat. Dyeing technique, plangi, done by women. Used on hand-woven silk, then cotton-silk blends, then cotton. Accessories: heavy gold-plated silver belt and headdress of pure silk. Yelek was made in the early 1800s, dress dates century later.
