Contemporary Maori artist Steve Hikaiti - new prints

Ngati Po artist Steve Hikaiti draws strength from both the hardships he has endured in his life and his Maori lineage. Steve has raised himself through the adversity he has faced and through his artwork has found a release for his talents. His contemporary Maori art prints display an unrivaled attention to detail and a passion for perfection. Shown here are two of his new limited edition original prints, Patu and Discovery of Life.

The Armouries - Six Boats

On the morning of December 19th, 1642, while the day was still young, nine boats full of Maori Warriors paddled towards two huge ships intent on engaging their foe. Whilst they were similar in numbers, the Maori were armed only with oars, sticks and clubs. The two ships they were paddling towards were brimming with gunpowder and steel.

The Wahaika is one of the several different war clubs used by Maori warriors. The wahaika was used exclusively by the most fierce, and respected warriors with the highest rankings. It was given as a ceremonial piece Maori People, Polynesian Art, Maori Designs, New Zealand Art, Nz Art, Maori Art, Kiwiana, Historical Artifacts, Indigenous Art

Before the Europeans set foot in New Zealand warfare between Maori tribes was commonplace. From a young age male members of Maori tribes were educated in warfare and combat tactics. Later on the British colonial troops would find out how fierce and powerful these experts in guerilla warfare were. Typical Maori weapons are the maripu, patu and taiaha. On the photo a taiaha with greenstone jade spear point resembling the ever reoccurring tongue. This taiaha has a wood carving on the base.

The MIGHTY Hei Taiaha - Hand carved bone taiaha pendant - $60 AUS.

Typical Maori weapons are the maripu, patu and taiaha. This is a talaha. I beleive even their weapons were works of art, which seem to me, to be some of the most intricate carvings of any culture in the world.
