Pataua Estuary, Northland, New Zealand. We had a cottage with this view, and one day as a boy I set the sails of my beautiful toy yacht to sail out the entrance you can see and sail away into the Pacific Ocean on adventures I shared in my dreams and imagination into my adult life.
Pataua is renowned as a popular holiday destination with a safe lagoon, excellent golden sand beaches, good surf breaks and a DOC, Department of Conservation, walking track. It is in close proximity (approximately 16 nautical miles) to the Poor Knights Island Marine Reserve, one of New Zealand best scuba diving experiences.
A brisk walk up Pataua Island Mountain
From anywhere within Pataua estuary is a view of varying-sized green humps and hills. The most obvious and attractive is the cone on Pataua Island, known locally as Pataua Mountain, only it’s not really a mountain, and it’s not an island, but a decent hill just the same.
