Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge This Assateague Island refuge off Virginia's coast. Chincoteague is best known for its wild ponies, descended from horses presumed to have swum ashore from Spanish galleons that sank off the coast in the 15th and 16th centuries. The annual pony swim to and from Chincoteague Island happens at the end of July.

Przewalski Horse. It's still debated if Przewalski, the last real wild horse is of the same species as the fdomesticated horse or a species of its own. It has some chromosome differences but can produce fertile offspring when crossed with domesticated horse. Przewalski lived on the steppes of Mongolia but became extinct in the wild in 1966. Luckily there were Przewalskis in the zoos around the world and now some horses have been reintroduced to their native habitat.
A new Przewalski’s foal, center, is welcomed into Highland Wildlife Park in Kingussie, Scotland. The foal, born Sept. 2, is the first newborn Przewalski's horse at the park in five years. Przewalski's horses were once extinct in the wild until a small captive-bred population were reintroduced in Mongolia in the 1990s. They are now listed as endangered.
