The Barker’s Story
"During the 1980 and 1981 seasons, we made about 10,000 gallons of elderberry wine, constrained only by the availability and accessibility of wild elderberries from riverbeds between Christchurch and Burkes Pass. The Regional Catchment Boards of the day were attempting to eradicate the elder, given its classification as a semi-noxious weed. Our mindset to make 'something out of nothing' has always driven us to keep innovating." -- Michael Barker
"Our whole family, plus some casual helpers, filled and corked and capsuled and labelled every bottle by hand. Back then I was only about 11 years old…just a boy in shorts during that first vintage, but I remember it well." - Michael Barker
"Mum managed the wine shop and, as we children grew up, we would all take our turn to serve customers, competing with each other to ensure no customer left empty handed." - Michael Barker #celebrating50years

The Barkers Story
While the Barker kids loved the home-made swimming pool, the most lucrative and acclaimed invention was the Kent-Barker fireplace. Manufactured and marketed by Kent Heating it was the world’s first efficient wood-burning heater. The unique patented features, including a downward air wash to keep the glass door clean, were adopted by most manufacturers worldwide.
The Barker Story
In 1969 Anthony Barker began picking the wild elderberries on his farm to create traditional country wines. Gooseberry, strawberry, blackcurrant, apricot and raspberry wines, aperitifs and liqueurs followed with blackberries, loganberries and kiwifruit.
