Don't use DRY beans, rice & other choking hazards in your sensory bins with babies. These dry goods are great for older toddlers but pose a safety risk with babies. On my blog, I share 5 food-safe activities you can do with your baby to encourage them to explore their sense of smell, taste, hearing, touch & vision through sensory play! Go to: MsDawnSLP.com/Blog under the "Baby Sensory Play" category for more ideas. And go.msdawnslp.com/ChokingCourse to learn more about avoiding choking hazards.

Child-choking incidents on inhaled balloons account for almost 29% of choking deaths. Although mortality rates are highest with babies, research shows that even children as old as 6 years (and even older) have died from choking on balloons. Yet balloons are at every child’s birthday party, sports event, or summer outing (water balloons). With all the balloons in your child’s life, what can you do to increase safety? Read my blog: “How to Decrease Infant Choking Risks on Non-Food Items.” Blowing Up Balloons, Water Balloons, The Balloon, Starting Solids, Led Pencils, Mortality Rate, Food Items, Sport Event

It's essential to incorporate sensory food play during tummy time. This helps to distract your baby, increase their tolerance, and expose them to foods they will eventually eat! Learning about a food's color, texture, and shape through sensory play is a great way to encourage your babe to be an adventurous eater! DIY Directions: Put 1/2 cup of frozen peas into a gallon-sized plastic bag. Fill bag a third of the way with water, remove air & zip it shut. Secure your sensory bag with duct tape. Here's my sensory-art activity to teach baby to sit at the high chair a little longer. Just place a few globs of paint inside a bubble wrap “pocket” + tape it to your highchair tray or footrest to have #baby discover all the colors with their eyes, hands + feet. This is a fun sensory experience for your baby + it's a great language activity for learning the colors they will see at mealtime! You can also use purees instead of paint by adding a little food coloring to make the puree bright + fun! Avoid dry beans, rice + other choking hazards when doing sensory food play with babies. Instead, try: Yogurt: add a drop of food coloring to expand their visual sense Jell-O: Dunk a toy into Jell-O to expand your baby's sense of touch by digging the toy out Hummus: Let baby slap the hummus with their hands + talk about wet sounds + their hearing sense Banana: Give baby a peeled banana to smell + eat. The fragrance encourages their senses of smell + taste. Learn more sensory ideas on my blog.

I love the @QdosSafety StayPut® Outlet Plugs because this one plug covers BOTH outlets! And they have an extra tight fit and beveled edges that prevent small fingers from grasping and removing them. They can prevent electric shock and burns - because they prevent children from placing objects in it! They fit on all outlets, come in a 6 pack, and have a clean, white design that blends with the outlet cover to go unnoticed by children.

Making sensory bottles for your baby or toddler doesn't have to be complicated... all you need to do is fill one halfway with ice and top with cold water, then fill the other with warm tap water. That's it! Well, make sure to tighten the lids. Lol! Did you know that "temperature" is one of my "4-T tips" to starting solids? Exposing baby to a variety of temperatures at an early age can help decrease picky eating tendencies. Picky Eating, Sensory Bottles, Halfway, Tighten

I LOVE making sensory bins for babies & toddlers! DIRECTIONS Pour oatmeal into a tub and hide a toy or two in it. For babies, make sure half of the toy is visible so your babe can easily find it and pull it out. For toddlers, cover the entire toy and see if they can guess what the toy is by just feeling it. Have them try not to peek! You can find all of my favorite sensory toys and tools in my Amazon Store categorized by age groups. #SensoryPlay Peek, Hide, Toddlers, Tub, Oatmeal, Entire

Baby sensory play doesn't always have to include food, paint, or water. For example, if you have a 5-month-old, you can have them lie on your shins during play to help improve their head and neck strength gently. This is a fun activity to help get baby's head and neck ready for sitting in the high chair to eat. Head control is a major milestone, and by 6 months, most babies have gained enough strength in their neck and upper body to hold their head up to start solids safely. 5 Month Olds, Get Baby, Baby Head, Head And Neck, Upper Body, Fun Activities
