The Business of Bookkeeping
So, let me ask you this - Is your business always getting the last child's hand-me-downs of your time and attention ? This used to be me, prioritizing clients' work over my own business, until I realized that I had to treat my own business like it was my best client. I had to lead by example, and I had to practice what I preached. PS: Bookkeeping Business Coaching Week starts 15th August. This is your opportunity to experience what it's like to be a part of my coaching programmes. #bookkeeping
In business you need to put consistent effort into your #sales and #marketing. Continuously promoting your business’s services gives you a steady stream of leads and referrals which in turn allows you to be picky about the clients that you choose to work with. #bookkeeping #bookkeepers #bookkeepingbusiness #bookkeepercoach #bookkeepingbusinesscoach #bookkeepermentor
Bookkeeping Business Tip: "Think about your future capacity and plan earlier rather than later" I have found that it's best to have some capacity up your sleeve when bringing on new team members so that you can support them in learning the ropes, and so that you still have time to deal with any unexpected business issues. #delegate #bookkeeping #bookkeepers #bookkeepingbusiness #bookkeepercoach #bookkeepingbusinesscoach #bookkeepermentor
Resilience has become a bit of a buzz word in the past few years, and not without good reason. Turns out that resilience is a strong indicator of success in life, and it also has significant health benefits, particularly our mental health. The good news is that resilience is not something that some of us are born with and some of us aren't. There are very real and very practical things that we can do to develop and foster resilience. #resilience #bookkeeping #bookkeepers #bookkeepingbusiness
Bookkeepers are so good at keeping an eye on other peoples' numbers but, much to my surprise, they sometimes neglect their own. It’s a classic case of the builder’s house never being done. You don’t need me to tell you that this needs to change if you want to build a successful bookkeeping business, but I’m telling you anyway. Look at your own numbers, regularly and often. 'Nuff said? 😏 #insight #bookkeeping #bookkeepers #bookkeepingbusiness #bookkeepercoach #bookkeepermentor
Bookkeeping is ultimately a people business. Even if you are the most introverted of all of us you will likely feel alone and lonely at some point if all you are doing is sitting at your desk for hours on end processing the numbers. You will also undoubtedly need to communicate effectively with your clients. We need to have good people around us. By good people, I mean the clients that we work with and the team members that we bring into our business. #bookkeepers #bookkeepingbusiness
We often think that our friends and acquaintances know what we do because, you know, why wouldn't they? We talk about it all the time and we share about it on our Facebook page. But not everyone hears or sees all of that. And even if they do they sometimes forget. So you have to repeat the message from time to time. #bookkeepercoach #bookkeepermentor #bookkeepingbusinesscoach #bookkeepingbusiness #bookkeeper #letthemknow #whoweare

Sales is not scary once you reframe it as helping others to find solutions to their problems. I promise you, that is all that sales is. Focus on gaining clarity and understanding, and you will establish rapport. Listen. Everyone wants to feel listened to and understood and it's important to your prospect client that you get the uniqueness of their business.
Bookkeepers are often a little bit shy about sales. My take on sales, especially in the business-to-business space, is that it is all about building relationships and the quicker you can do that the better. It's not about forcing someone to buy something they don't want. It's about providing good-fit solutions to the problems and issues of others.
Networking Tip: Invest time in networking Time, not just showing up each week or fortnight at the meetings, but time outside of the meetings getting to know your fellow members on a 1-to-1 basis. Double the groups, double the number of 1-to-1 you’re expected to undertake.
I thought to myself, “I’m a bookkeeper, what on earth could I possibly write about that’s not going to bore my clients and send them straight to the unsubscribe button?”. But turns out, I got sh*t to say. And I guarantee that you do too. #blogging #bookkeepingblog #engage
Sales Conversation Tip: I thought it would be helpful for me to create a checklist of things to ask when I was in sales conversations, or discovery meetings, with potential clients. Having a checklist as a focus point didn't lead to a well-flowing conversation and I didn't feel that I was actively listening, nor engaging. Instead, I like to mind map, a tool that I learned years ago which allows me to capture the information that I need whilst still engaging with the conversation. #SalesTip
Split loyalties - I recognised this dilemma after I attended my first meeting at a 2nd networking group. Which insurance agent would I refer to? Which mortgage broker? I made the decision then to just to stick to one networking group and to focus all my energy on building the relationships within that group. Focus on one and make the most of it.
When I say fake-it-til-you-make-it, I don't mean BE fake. Quite the opposite in fact, you need to be authentic and genuine. Think about who a person would be if they were great at networking, how they'd behave, what they'd say, and then act in that way, then you will become a great networker.
With bookkeeping it’s never just data entry. Every entry effects the system and we need to understand the cause and effect of what we're entering. That’s where a bookkeeper’s specialised knowledge comes into play. Without it, you just end up with meaningless information.
Givers Gain Networking groups work because they’re a group. Members are all looking out for each other. They’re giving to each other. It doesn’t work for someone if they’re just there to take. People notice that, and thus you become less likeable and less trustworthy.
