Manly, Brisbane, 1910 - Manly School was opened in 1910 with 107 students. The first head teacher was Major J. W. Watkins, who remained in charge for 22 years. Prior to the opening of the state school at Manly, private schools were conducted at various times in the area. One was at 164 Carlton Terrace; Mrs Lamb conducted classes in a dwelling at the corner of Wellington and Waterloo (Kooralgin) Streets. Misses Etty and Amy Horsley taught under a house belonging to Thomas and Elizabeth Goodman.
