Charles Fork Lake in Roane County, WV, approximately 2 miles SE of Spencer, accessible from WV Route 36 via County Route 36/2, is owned by the City of Spencer & provides our residents & guests alike w/ a multi-use area w/ over 25 miles of trails surrounding a mile long lake that sports excellent fishing, canoeing, & hiking & bike trails. Roane County (WV) native Nancy Hart rode and fought with the Moccasin Rangers (a nominally Confederate guerrilla group during the Civil War). A mountain spitfire, deadly as a copperhead and filled with partisan spirit, she was an effective spy and often escaped capture by using her considerable charm.
