Frances Eliza Wills and Harriet Ida Pickens became the Navy’s first African American female officers. The NAACP encouraged the Navy to enlist African American female officers and to integrate the service, overall. Pickens is also the daughter of former NAACP Field Secretary and Director of Branches, William Pickens. During their process to become officers, Pickens led physical training sessions while Wills taught naval history and administered classification tests.
